Professional Probate Jewellery Valuations

Administering an estate often involves identifying and establishing the value of personal possessions belonging to the person who has died.

This can include:

  • Jewellery
  • Diamond jewellery
  • Gemstone jewellery
  • Watches
  • Antique and vintage jewellery
  • Gold and precious-metal items
  • Other valuable personal possessions within our area of expertise

A probate valuation serves a different purpose from an insurance valuation.

Rather than determining what an item might cost to replace through the retail market, a probate valuation establishes an appropriate open-market value at the relevant date.

Jewellery Valuations for Probate & Inheritance Tax

For probate and estate purposes, jewellery may need to be included when establishing the overall value of an estate.

Where required for Inheritance Tax purposes, an open-market valuation basis is used.

This means considering the amount the item might reasonably have been expected to achieve if sold on the open market at the relevant time.

Our probate jewellery valuations can help provide the documentation required by:

  • Executors
  • Personal representatives
  • Solicitors
  • Accountants
  • Family members administering an estate

If you have been given specific instructions by a solicitor or other professional adviser, please bring these with you or discuss them with us before the valuation.

When Might a Probate Jewellery Valuation Be Needed?

A professional estate valuation may be useful where:

  • Jewellery forms part of an estate
  • Executors need to establish the value of personal possessions
  • Values are required for estate administration
  • An estate requires information for Inheritance Tax purposes
  • A solicitor has requested professional valuations
  • Valuable possessions need to be identified and recorded
  • Jewellery is to be divided between beneficiaries
  • Family members require an independent value before items are distributed

Even where an estate is ultimately below the threshold for Inheritance Tax, jewellery and other possessions may still need to be considered when establishing its overall value.

Specialist Valuations & Additional Estate Assets

Every item entrusted to us is assessed individually, with careful consideration given to its materials, craftsmanship, age, condition, rarity and relevant market value.

We also appreciate that an estate may contain valuable possessions beyond jewellery and watches.

Through our partnership with Leighton Hall Auctions, we can help families, executors and solicitors access specialist valuation expertise for a broader range of estate assets, including pottery, ceramics, militaria, antiques, collectables and specialist collections.

Where an item falls outside our immediate area of expertise, we will always advise you accordingly and help direct you towards the appropriate specialist.

Our aim is to make the estate valuation process as straightforward as possible, offering a trusted point of contact for families managing a loved one’s possessions.

Antique & Inherited Jewellery

Estates frequently contain jewellery that has been owned within a family for decades or even generations.

These pieces can be difficult to assess without specialist knowledge, particularly where the original purchase paperwork is no longer available.

Our experience includes a wide range of antique and vintage jewellery, including:

  • Antique diamond rings
  • Period brooches
  • Lockets and pendants
  • Bracelets
  • Gemstone jewellery
  • Vintage engagement rings
  • Older gold jewellery
  • Family heirlooms

We assess each piece according to the appropriate market rather than simply considering its precious-metal content.

Diamond & Gemstone Jewellery

We can assess both mounted and loose diamonds as part of a probate valuation.

Our experience includes:

  • Modern brilliant-cut diamonds
  • Old mine-cut diamonds
  • Old European-cut diamonds
  • Rose-cut diamonds
  • Fancy-cut diamonds
  • Coloured diamonds

We can also assess jewellery containing gemstones such as:

  • Rubies
  • Sapphires
  • Emeralds
  • Natural and cultured pearls
  • Fine jade
  • Other coloured gemstones

Existing laboratory reports or certification can also be considered where available.

Luxury Watch Valuations for Probate

Luxury watches may form a significant part of an estate.

We can assess suitable watches as part of a probate valuation and consider relevant factors such as:

  • Brand
  • Model
  • Reference
  • Age
  • Condition
  • Box and papers
  • Market demand
  • Comparable open-market values

Where particularly specialist or unusual watches require further research, we will explain this as part of the process.

Coins & Precious Metal Collectables

At Trentham Jewellery Centre, we provide valuations and assessments for a wide range of gold and silver coins, precious metal collectables and inherited coin collections, from individual pieces to extensive collections accumulated over generations.

Our expertise in precious metals, combined with our connections to specialist coin valuers and numismatic experts, allows us to assist with the assessment of both the intrinsic precious metal value and potential collectable value of coins.

We can assist with a diverse range of coins and collectables, including:

  • British Gold Sovereigns & Half Sovereigns – Including historic, Victorian and modern issues.
  • Gold Guineas – Historic British gold coinage, including rare and collectable examples.
  • International Gold Coins – Including American gold dollars, European gold coinage and other historic coins from around the world.
  • Ancient Coins – Including Roman, Ancient Greek and Persian coinage.
  • British Hammered Coins – Historic hand-struck silver and gold coins spanning various British monarchs and reigns.
  • Gold & Silver Bullion – Including investment coins, bullion bars and other precious metal holdings.
  • Inherited Coin Collections – Mixed collections of British, international, antique and collectable coinage.

Specialist Valuations & Selling Your Coins

While the precious metal content of many coins can be assessed using our advanced XRF testing equipment, we recognise that certain coins may hold significant numismatic value beyond their gold or silver content.

For particularly rare, historic or valuable examples, we can arrange assessments through our network of specialist coin valuers, ensuring that important pieces receive the appropriate expert consideration.

If you’re considering selling inherited coins, gold sovereigns, bullion or an existing collection, we are also interested in purchasing precious metal items directly.

Whether you’re managing an estate, exploring the value of a family collection or simply looking to sell unwanted gold and silver, our team can explain your options and provide a straightforward, transparent assessment.

No appointment necessary. Simply visit our Trentham showroom with your coins or collection, and we’ll be happy to assist.

Probate Valuation vs Insurance Valuation

These are two different forms of valuation.

Probate Valuation

A probate valuation establishes an appropriate open-market value for estate purposes at the relevant date.

Insurance Valuation

An insurance valuation establishes an appropriate replacement value so an item can be suitably covered under an insurance policy.

The insurance value of an item may therefore be substantially higher than its probate value. This is based on a higher retail replacement cost to include design, labour, materials, retail mark-up and VAT.

If you require an insurance valuation instead, please see our dedicated service page.

Probate Valuation vs Selling Value

A probate valuation does not mean the jewellery has to be sold.

Its purpose is to establish an appropriate value for estate administration.

Once the relevant probate or estate matters have been dealt with, beneficiaries may choose to:

  • Keep the jewellery
  • Divide pieces between family members
  • Obtain an insurance valuation
  • Restore inherited jewellery
  • Remodel inherited jewellery
  • Sell unwanted items

If you decide you would like to sell jewellery from an estate, we can provide a separate free, no-obligation purchase appraisal.

How Much Does a Probate Jewellery Valuation Cost?

Our current probate valuation charges are:

  • Call-out charge and/or single item charge— £60
  • Standard valuation of 2–10 standard jewellery items — £120
  • More than 10 items or complex higher value pieces— contact us for a personalised quote

For larger estates or more complicated collections, please contact us beforehand so we can discuss the number and nature of the items involved.

Probate Valuations Across Staffordshire & Surrounding Areas

We provide specialist probate jewellery valuations for customers across:

  • Stoke-on-Trent
  • Staffordshire
  • Staffordshire Moorlands
  • Cheshire
  • Shropshire
  • Surrounding areas

Call-out valuations are available where appropriate.

If the jewellery cannot easily be brought into our showroom, contact us to discuss the location and the number of items requiring assessment.

Working With Executors, Families & Solicitors

We understand that probate valuations often form one part of a wider and sometimes complex estate-administration process.

Our aim is to make the jewellery valuation element as clear and straightforward as possible.

We can work with:

  • Private executors
  • Personal representatives
  • Families
  • Solicitors
  • Other professional advisers

If documentation needs to be prepared for a particular purpose, please let us know at the outset so we can ensure the correct valuation service is being provided.

Jewellery From an Estate: What Happens Next?

Once an estate has been valued and the relevant administration completed, there may be several options for inherited jewellery.

You may wish to:

Keep It

Important family pieces can simply be retained and, where appropriate, professionally valued for insurance.

Restore It

Older or worn jewellery can often be repaired and sympathetically restored for continued wear.

Remodel It

Inherited stones or precious metals can sometimes be incorporated into a new piece of jewellery while retaining their sentimental significance.

Sell It

If an item is unwanted, we can provide a separate free purchase appraisal once the estate is in a position to sell it.

Your Jewellery in Our Care

We understand that jewellery forming part of an estate can have considerable sentimental and financial importance.

When items are left with us for valuation, they are recorded and handled in line with our procedures while in our care.

Please provide any relevant information or documentation available, including:

  • Original purchase receipts
  • Previous valuations
  • Diamond certificates
  • Watch box and papers
  • Known provenance
  • Details supplied by a solicitor or executor

This information can assist with the assessment, although a lack of paperwork does not necessarily prevent a valuation from being carried out.

Don’t just take our word for it!
